Topaz occurs in a huge variety of colors varying from blue, orange, pink, gold, yellow, clear, peach, red, right through to brown. Topaz is mined in many places, but mainly in Brazil, Russia, and Sri Lanka.
Red and pink topaz has been know to have been used in the eighteenth and nineteenth century by Russian Czarinas where it became known as "Imperial Topaz". Clear Topaz is its most popular form. When it was first discovered, it was thought to be a diamond until further research was undertaken.
Topaz is a firm gemstone and is perfect for handmade gemstone jewelry with the hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. However, it can still be shattered by heavy blows and should be treated well like all other jewelry.
